COMMUNITY NEWS

  • PetSmart will host National Adoption Week with pets available at its Beaumont store on 4045 Dowlen Rd and at other locations this week. Kelly Kays, DVM, appeared on The Morning Show to explain the adoption schedule — a pet is adopted every 38 seconds.  KFDM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The McFaddin-Ward House Museum is ending its butterfly-themed SOAR Celebration with a free event called Music at the McFaddins—featuring energetic band The Stringbenders—this Friday, March 28th at 6:30 p.m. on its lawn at 1906 McFaddin Ave, where visitors can also explore the Butterfly Art Garden if weather holds.  KFDM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southeast Texas Women in Industry held a networking mixer on Monday at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas to mentor students in industrial careers and launch a four-day series of events. Today a Leadership Luncheon is taking place at Bob Bowers Civic Center in Port Arthur—coffee chats at local colleges and speed mentoring at high schools will follow on March 26 and 27.  12 News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At about 4:30 a.m. Monday, hurricane-force winds with gusts estimated at 83 mph knocked out power for more than 1,000 people in Sabine Pass and Port Arthur—damaging a school football field, playground, and travel trailers—but no injuries were reported.  KFDM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Developer Tom Flanagan filed a petition in court to stop demolition of the 123-year-old Gilbert Building after the city council declared it an imminent danger and ordered its razing within five days on March 18—Judge Kent Walston granted a temporary restraining order and set a hearing for 9 a.m. April 7 to review his request.  KFDM
  • At Monday night's council meeting, a large crowd in Nederland voiced anger over drainage issues as rainwater mixing with sewage caused flooding and home damage. The council ordered a study on leaks and residents said they would return at another meeting if future storms repeated the problems — demanding a lasting fix.  KFDM
