ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Port Neches police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash on 8th Street near Texas Avenue where a man was taken by ambulance and later died—police, fire, and EMS responded at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday.  KFDM

CRIME NEWS

  • A Liberty County correctional officer—Cadon Jermain Bowlen—admitted carrying a vape pen on duty for over two and a half hours and allowing an inmate to use it before he was arrested on March 21 for a third-degree felony at the county jail.  12 News Now
  • Jefferson County’s grand jury indicted Eddie Davis Jr., 18, and Jason Murchison Jr. on murder charges for the shooting death of Clifford Motton, 54—who was killed around 7:30 p.m. January 1 in the 3900 block of St. Helena near Walton—and Beaumont Police have asked anyone with video or information to contact Crime Stoppers.  KFDM
  • Jefferson County grand jury indicted suspect Nerbert Frelow Jr.—56—for the January 18 shooting death of 33-year-old Donesha Buckner at Normandy Apartments after he surrendered on March 19 and his bond was set at $1 million.  KFDM
  • Calvin Gary Walker, the former Beaumont ISD electrical contractor convicted of felony fraud in 2019 who stole $1.2 million from the district more than a decade ago, will appear on May 13 in Jefferson County Criminal District Court for a hearing to revoke his probation due to financial discrepancies and failure to meet restitution obligations (he has paid only $2,488 toward nearly $1.17 million in restitution).  12 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Mutual Insurance Company awarded a $100,000 grant to Lamar Institute of Technology to support its Safety Awareness Institute that provides workplace safety courses to local workers and employers—this marks the eighth consecutive year of funding—and the program has trained about 2,300 students since its launch in 2017.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • Beaumont ISD has increased its number of highly qualified teachers from 30 to 62 while cutting teaching vacancies from 139 to 87. The district uses its Grow Our Own and Responsive Academy programs—helping current staff become certified to fill elementary and secondary positions including bilingual roles.  KFDM
  • Precinct 1 Place 1 Justice of the Peace Judge Naomi Doyle leads the Judicial Academy, a program for 10th and 12th graders to learn about the judicial system—helping steer teens away from crime with hands-on court sessions and mock trials. The initiative now serves students in Beaumont and Port Arthur.  12 News Now

  • Gift of Life will host its 18th Annual Champagne & Ribs Paranormal Party of the Year on April 24th at 6:30 p.m. at the Beaumont Civic Center to raise funds for lifesaving prostate cancer screenings & men's health services for Southeast Texans.  KFDM
