- ➤ Linda and Tom Settle, married for 61 years, have volunteered at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital every Monday for 23 years, giving care to patients and families. - ➤ Beaumont’s city issued a request on March 27 for proposals to hire a consultant to study if the downtown library can share space with the children’s museum, which must leave its current site due to planned renovations. - ➤ On April 5, the Blanda family celebrated 20 years of owning Jak's Pak It by hosting an event with food, beer, and wine samples, face painting and a raffle. - ➤ An 18-year-old from Port Arthur was indicted on March 8 for burglary and criminal mischief after he allegedly broke into Academy Sports and Outdoors—reportedly attempting to steal guns and damaging property worth between $2,500 and $30,000. Beaumont Enterprise
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Former city council member Tom Combs said Maury Meyers would have supported demolishing the bridge if it made things better for the citizens. The bridge, built in 1996 and a symbol of downtown growth, will be torn down starting April 11 to allow taller vehicles on the interstate—drivers will use alternate routes during construction. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ An 8-year-old girl in Texas died on April 3 from measles pulmonary failure amid an outbreak that has spread to Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas. The outbreak has caused at least 569 cases and a second death, with Texas reporting 481 cases mostly in unvaccinated children — experts worry the numbers may be higher. KFDM

- ➤ Bridge City's Chase Shugart—who helped lead his local team to four straight district titles—was called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday to pitch one batter in the ninth inning against the Yankees.
