- ➤ Linda and Tom Settle, married for 61 years, have volunteered at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital every Monday for 23 years, giving care to patients and families. - ➤ Beaumont’s city issued a request on March 27 for proposals to hire a consultant to study if the downtown library can share space with the children’s museum, which must leave its current site due to planned renovations. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Former city council member Tom Combs said Maury Meyers would have supported demolishing the bridge if it made things better for the citizens. The bridge, built in 1996 and a symbol of downtown growth, will be torn down starting April 11 to allow taller vehicles on the interstate—drivers will use alternate routes during construction. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ An 8-year-old girl in Texas died on April 3 from measles pulmonary failure amid an outbreak that has spread to Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas. The outbreak has caused at least 569 cases and a second death, with Texas reporting 481 cases mostly in unvaccinated children — experts worry the numbers may be higher. KFDM
