  • Theresa is a five-month-old kitten at Beaumont Animal Care who arrived on April 17 after being found near Lamar University and is now looking for a loving home. Shelter staff say she is shy but warms up fast.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • Federal budget cuts have eliminated two key federal programs—one that provided 500,000 pounds of food and another valued at $1.2 million—which caused the Southeast Texas Food Bank to lose nearly one million pounds of food and require clients to use only a single pantry, and local officials urge community donations to help fill the gap.  12 News Now
  • Greenlawn Cemetery on Gill Street shows neglect as overgrown weeds hide graves and one vault holds an exposed human skull in water, causing deep concern among visitors. Michael Mott, the new owner, said he will fill broken vaults with dirt unless families pay for full restoration—he urged community involvement to care for the cemetery.  FOX 4 Beaumont
  • Greenlawn Cemetery on Gill Street in North Beaumont has been neglected with tall weeds, broken headstones, and an exposed human skull in a water-filled vault that upset visitors.   • Layne’s Chicken Fingers is opening its second Southeast Texas location today at 3026 Farm Road 365 in Nederland—owner Masroor Fatany said the restaurant will offer music, giveaways and a raffle for a year of free meals. He explained that after a strong start in Beaumont, he plans to add more sites in Orange, Vidor and Lumberton.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • Pour Neches is a new restaurant and entertainment venue on the Port Neches river that will open within the next week—offering dining, live music, and the region's first full-service pickleball facility. The family-friendly spot also serves a wide menu from pizza and burgers to seafood and has a pet-friendly area.  12 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Beaumont ISD School Board unanimously approved renaming Early College High School to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Academy at its Thursday evening meeting. Students had suggested new names and Principal Melanie Pharis said the change reflects the school’s focus on college and career readiness.  Beaumont Enterprise

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • KFDM hosted four debates on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. for candidates running for Beaumont City Council, and missed broadcasts can be replayed online. The city will hold its General Election on May 3.  KFDM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Fishing experts say local lakes will offer good chances for bass, crappie, and catfish this weekend. They report water levels and temperatures mostly in the low 70s and anglers will use techniques like jigs, minnows, and spinnerbaits—focusing on both shallow and mid-depth spots from Sam Rayburn to Palestine.  Beaumont Enterprise
