CRIME NEWS

  • Beaumont police arrested ten people Tuesday night for a series of shootings that injured eight from May 1 to May 7—officers said groups of friends and family planned their violent confrontations using social media.  12 News Now
  • Calvin Walker appeared at the Jefferson County Courthouse to contest a restitution order for Beaumont ISD and request a new trial but Judge John Stevens denied his motions — his attorney said the scheduled hearing may be canceled due to jurisdiction issues, leaving Walker facing nine and a half years in jail with 180 previously-served days credited if his appeal fails.  Beaumont Enterprise

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Gayla Dubose is retiring from Sallie Curtis Elementary after 56 years—community members who know her or were taught by her are asked to send cards or letters by May 27 to 6225 N Circuit Dr, Beaumont. Dubose, 77, said she looks forward to starting volunteer work at the animal shelter, hospitals, and schools once she closes her classroom door.  12 News Now
  • High schools in Southeast Texas have seen record graduation booms with rising numbers—West Orange Stark had 149 graduates, Lumberton reported 279, and Port Arthur ISD experienced a 3.5% increase with more students earning degrees and certificates. Port Arthur ISD seniors from Memorial High and Wilson Early College are set to graduate tonight at Doggett Ford Park—district officials credit extra tutoring and parent involvement for the success.  FOX 4 Beaumont

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT is installing large culverts along the I-10/US 69 interchange to improve drainage and reduce flooding risk plus engineers are using past master plans and local input to guide the work in the heavy rain area.   • May is National Physical Fitness Month as personal trainer Tanya Hansen with CHRISTUS Southeast Texas appeared on the noon show to share tips on getting back into shape; she explained that an active lifestyle helps people of all ages and abilities stay healthy.  KFDM

  • The 15th Babe Zaharias High School Junior Golf Awards were held May 21 at 5 Under Golf Center in Beaumont, honoring Drake Andrepont and Lincoln Parks as Boys Player of the Year and Tatum Brown as Girls Player of the Year; the event featured a Cajun-themed dinner and guest speakers—coach Brad McMakin and PGA Tour player Chris Stroud shared advice with the young golfers.  Beaumont Enterprise
