- ➤ Community members in Port Arthur protested plans to temporarily close the Jefferson County Tax Assessor’s office—if the 90-day closure starting today becomes permanent, critics say it will hurt local taxpayers. Commissioner Michael Shane Sinegal will discuss the issue at a Commissioners Court meeting on June 10 as residents are urged to use alternative service locations in Beaumont and Mid-County. 12 News Now

- ➤ Federal prosecutors say four men tied to a Houston street gang robbed banks in Beaumont by ambushing ATM technicians—nearly $300K was taken—and the suspects are scheduled for trial on August 4th while remaining in federal custody. 12 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Construction on Interstate 10 in Beaumont will pause three days before any hurricane makes landfall, according to TxDOT. Workers on the U.S. 69/Interstate 10 interchange project will open evacuation routes for drivers in Jefferson County — who can take U.S. 69 into Hardin County — while Orange County drivers will use Farm Road 105, Texas 62 and Texas 87. - ➤ Jefferson County is preparing for hurricane season by cleaning culverts and conducting emergency management training to reduce flood risks. County Judge Jeff Branick said projects funded by hazard mitigation grants—such as raising the Port Arthur hurricane-protection levee and improving retention areas—will help protect the local area from future flooding.
