COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mahdy Chouirf, a Lamar University freshman and West Brook High School graduate who earned the Presidential Scholarship in 2024, died Sunday night at Baptist Hospital after collapsing while playing soccer at Dishman Soccer Fields. Friends, family and school officials remember him as a kind and hardworking young man who had planned to study chemical engineering at Lamar.  KFDM

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A lawsuit claims that an unsecured railing at Virginia Flats on 2230 W. Virginia St led to the fatal fall of Denise Coleman on December 2, 2024 while she was checking on a neighbor’s children — her attorney said landlords neglected proper maintenance and put tenants at risk.  Beaumont Enterprise

  • Henry's Seafood and Wings is opening a new Beaumont location at 8430 Phelan Blvd, Suite #100 next to the Kroozin convenience store and gas station. The restaurant is upgrading the building with a permit for alterations granted on May 14—its two current locations are on Highland Ave and East Lucas Dr.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • Allen Perkins and Jay Jenkinson opened Riverside Grille downtown to serve fresh food made from scratch and keep dinner prices affordable. The restaurant features signature dishes like Bang Bang Shrimp and aged ribeye—showing their commitment to quality ingredients and a welcoming dining experience.  Beaumont Enterprise

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Beaumont Heritage Society will celebrate 180 years of local history at the John Jay French Museum on Saturday, June 14th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — the family-friendly event will offer reenactments from The Big Thicket Outlaws, blacksmithing demonstrations, animal visits, and a tour of the museum's first floor with admission at $5 for ages four and up while society members enter free.  FOX 4 Beaumont

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After overnight storms knocked out power for over 5,000 Entergy customers—over 3,000 in Orange County and 37 in Jefferson County—crews expect full restoration by 11:30 a.m. today. A tree fell at the John Jay French Museum in Beaumont.  KFDM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roy West won the Beaumont runoff for mayor by 207 ballots+ a 1.62 percent margin on June 7, marking one of the closest contests in at least a decade; Ward II Council member Joey Hilliard said every vote counts+ urging more community members to participate in future elections.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • Feeding Texas warned last week that proposed federal cuts to SNAP and Medicaid threaten to harm Texas families by reducing food and health benefits—affecting an estimated 806,000 individuals and risking coverage for 430,000 Texans. The sign-on letter endorsed by over 250 groups urged Senators Cornyn and Cruz to reject the cuts, noting that state leaders may have to raise taxes or cut other programs amid financial struggles.  Beaumont Enterprise

  • Kewan Alfred, a Beaumont native and key linebacker for the Renegades, aims to bring a championship to his hometown with his long career comeback. The Renegades beat the Columbus Lions 56-45 and will face the Omaha Beef in a championship game at Doggett Ford Arena on June 16 at 8 p.m.  Beaumont Enterprise
