Beaumont ISD is replacing traditional step raises with a performance-based pay model that gives teachers extra pay based on evaluations and student results.

The district is also enforcing state mandates by requiring new reading and math teachers to be certified and helping current teachers earn certification.

Beaumont ISD hired new teachers at a June job fair to fill at least 100 positions amid district challenges; Jamar Daw from Port Arthur will teach math at Smith Middle School this fall while Taylor Durenberger plans to share his passion for music with students.

Mayor Roy West said relief may be close as Beaumont nears completion of railroad quiet zones that will limit train horns—still pending final corrections—at key intersections.

Contractors must complete a punch list within 30 days before Washington approves the changes.
