Heavy rain and wind loosened a large tree — Fire Chief Eloy Vega said at 7:15 a.m. — which fell in Port Neches and knocked down power lines, leaving Entergy customers in Jefferson County without power.

Mayor Roy West urged community members during a Wednesday meeting with school officials and local groups to mentor youth to curb violence and keep public spaces like Rogers Park and the skate park safe as the coalition plans to train mentors in schools this fall.

Beaumont residents have long struggled with toilets that won't flush properly (lasting up to 14 years for some), as Water Utilities Director Mike Harris said heavy rains and aging pipes worsen the inflow issue and extra funding could help speed up repairs when the city plans its next budget.
