CRIME NEWS

  • A Jefferson County woman lost her $11,000 savings when scammers posing as officials sent her a fake arrest warrant and false texts that made her send cash and buy gift cards — police say it will be hard to recover the money.  12 News Now
  • A Jefferson County jury convicted Harry Francis Lowenthal of manslaughter in the fentanyl death of John Marion Jeanise in April 2023 and sentenced him to 45 years in prison after hours of deliberation Thursday—he had 18 previous convictions.  12 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • On July 20th, Southeast Texas Visionary Awards will honor local musicians, filmmakers, poets and designers at Downtown Event Centre—organizers say the event will showcase the region's creative talent.  KFDM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The city of Beaumont has started offering free bus rides to Beaumont ISD students as of July 16 and will begin providing the same service to Lamar students this fall—students must complete an online application or visit the transit office to receive an ID for unlimited rides while school is in session.  Beaumont Enterprise

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beaumont secured a $17,000 DOJ grant through the Project Safe Neighborhoods program to help fund police overtime and investigations against violent crime, adding to a $70,000 award from 2024. City leaders said the funding helped lower violent crime by 21 percent year over year and will support future safety efforts.  12 News Now
