CRIME NEWS

  • A 60-year-old woman from Silsbee drove her pickup truck through Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Lumberton on July 21 and said she was 'making a movie' while destroying church property valued at $125,000 — she was arrested and faces a third-degree felony charge with bond set at $75,000.  KFDM
  • William Carter Paddio Jr., 43, pleaded guilty to three counts of forgery for using counterfeit $100 bills at Parkdale Mall on Eastex Freeway in 2022 and received 10 years probation from Criminal District Court Judge John Stevens — three additional charges were dismissed under his plea deal.  12 News Now
  • An assistant district attorney in Jefferson County, Sonny Eckhart, resigned Monday after police arrested him on July 31 on a Class A Misdemeanor assault/family violence charge following an incident where his wife reported he grabbed and slammed her during a dispute over their son—he posted a $2,500 bond and faces up to one year in jail or a $4,000 fine if convicted.  KFDM
  • Judge Raquel West set a December 8 trial for 68 year old Terry Rose in the murder of Kimberly Langwell whose remains were found at his Beaumont home after she vanished on July 9, 1999—Rose rejected a plea deal that would have led to a 40 year sentence and he faces up to life in prison if convicted.  KFDM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Texas Energy Museum at 600 Main St. in Beaumont has been closed since early July after a burst hot water line caused flooding that led to the discovery of asbestos under the floor. Asbestos removal will begin Aug. 18 — a process that is expected to take about one week.  Beaumont Enterprise

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, Beaumont shoppers can avoid paying 6.25% sales tax on selected clothing, footwear, backpacks with a 10-item limit and school supplies during Texas’ annual tax-free weekend that runs until midnight Aug. 10. Items over $100, specialty athletic gear and accessories remain taxed—shipping fees may count toward the purchase price and push items over the limit.  12 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 300 students began school today at Monsignor Kelly High School with a senior sunrise event at 6 a.m. — the gathering honored three former students who died in the July 4th flooding.  KFDM

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new $40 million cancer center is under construction at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas to offer advanced treatments like chemotherapy (previously available only in Houston) to local patients. Construction is expected to finish early December and the center will fully open in January.  12 News Now
