Port Neches-Groves ISD superintendent Dr. Mike Gonzales is retiring effective August 17 after decades in education, as announced at Monday's school board meeting (with a special meeting at 5:15 p.m. set to name an interim superintendent).

Lovebugs — harmless yet pesky — are coating windshields around town after heavy rains triggered an early surge this season; drivers are advised to wash the residues off within 24 hours to prevent damage.

Neighbors in the Avenues neighborhood asked city officials to act on an abandoned home at the 1900 block of Milam near Fletcher Elementary because overgrown grass and broken windows pose a safety risk.
They reported it and want the city to clean up, demolish, or reopen the property.

Nearly 30,000 pounds of raw beef imported from Argentina was recalled by Corte Argentino USA LLC for missing required federal reinspection — the beef sold in Texas and Florida bears use-or-freeze-by dates from Sept.
15 to Sept. 20.
