COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dr. Kelley Kays, founder of Beaumont Pets Alive, started the nonprofit after she saw high euthanasia rates at the municipal shelter while working as a veterinarian in Beaumont. The rescue—located in Winnie—currently cares for about 50 cats and organizes weekly adoption events at PetSmarts in Beaumont, East Houston, and Lake Charles as it seeks volunteers for transport and foster support.  12 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • An appeals court denied ex-BISD electrician Calvin Walker's challenge to reverse his bond revocation for defrauding the school district of over $1.17 million—Walker is set to appear on August 29 for a second appeal.  12 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • First United Methodist Church will present Fiddler on the Roof Senior on Saturday, August 16th at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at 701 Calder Ave — featuring a cast over 55 and raising funds for Once Upon a Dream Daycare.  KFDM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Beaumont ISD students start the new school year today by watching a video on AI ethics by Jackie Simien (the district’s director of community and media relations) that explains AI should help with learning and not do the work for them. The district warns that using AI to cheat will lead to grade penalties and potential suspension while teachers take steps to protect student privacy and data security.  FOX 4 Beaumont

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beaumont City Council approved a 2% hotel tax increase — set for a November vote — to help fund a planned downtown convention center. City officials said the new measure might generate over $1 million annually for the Convention and Visitors Bureau.  12 News Now
  • Beaumont City Council voted 6—1 to place a $264.1 million bond proposal on the November ballot that may raise the average homeowner’s tax by about $14.25. The bond funds projects for roads, public safety, and a multi—purpose community center in the South End to help address local safety concerns.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • On Tuesday evening, heavy traffic clogged westbound I-10 near Corporate Drive and Washington Boulevard with many drivers reporting a standstill — the congestion eased near Toccoa Street and Louisiana Street. Northbound on U.S. 69, drivers experienced light traffic near South 4th Street as reported by TxDOT.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • The city of Beaumont hosts City Hall Selfie Day where residents can take a selfie at any city building—using #CityHallSelfie to share their pride. City staff will join in and photos sent to the city will be featured later to highlight community spirit.  Beaumont Enterprise
