- ➤ The jury in Judge John Stevens’ court convicted 25-year-old Jovan Neveaux for the April 15 home invasion murder at Valley Estates Apartments in Port Arthur with the punishment phase beginning tomorrow—he is already serving a life sentence after a May probation violation sentence. KFDM

- ➤ Southeast Texas mourns Richard Perkins, the pioneering Black opera singer from Port Arthur who died from lung cancer at 79 the weekend of August 9 & was a beloved figure known for his strong voice and community service. - ➤ Tuesday, August 12 saw a busy Meet the Teacher event at Sallie Curtis Elementary where parents, students, and teachers—like veteran Meagan Smith—gathered amid a notable staff turnover. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, Beaumont City Council approved a proposal to place a $60M bond measure before voters to build a new police headquarters that will replace the 51-year-old facility with safety hazards—if approved, taxes will rise about $14.25 per month. This measure addresses issues of asbestos, mold, flooding, and accessibility in the old building. 12 News Now
- ➤ Beaumont City Council set November 4 for an $11 million bond vote to fund the Alice Keith Multipurpose Center at the south end—designed to offer classrooms, recreational space, and skill-building programs to reduce crime and boost job readiness. Council Member LaDonna Sherwood said the new center would give young people more chances than the current outdoor basketball court, playground, and pool. KFDM
