ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out Monday at the Beaumont Athletic Complex damaging the former pro shop at the Municipal Tennis Center—city officials say an electrical short sparked the blaze and the building is expected to be demolished.  KFDM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Beaumont will host the VIVA Beaumont Hispanic Heritage Fest on Sunday, September 14 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Main Street where residents will enjoy food trucks, live music, Lucha libre wrestling, and cultural dances. Students from the Beaumont Independent School District will share their art — adding a creative touch — while admission remains free for everyone.  KFDM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Beaumont city leaders, first responders and Lamar Institute of Technology met on Tuesday to plan a new way to help BISD students get future jobs as the state may take over the district. Councilman Joey Hilliard and Trustee Joe Evans said they will promote the civil service exam—an option for police and firefighters—while union leaders plan long-term mentoring and the college offers $9.5 million in scholarships.  12 News Now
  • Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board announced that free college application week will run Oct. 13—19 to allow Texas residents to apply to public colleges without fees. Starting next year, the event will be held annually during the second full week of October.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • A new Texas law, Senate Bill 12, took effect on September 1 and requires parents to consent to student healthcare services. School nurses at Hamshire-Fannett ISD say confusion has arisen—so the district is using social media to inform parents and gather consent forms.  KFDM

  • Beaumont voters will decide in November on Proposition E—part of the city's $264 million bond—to fund an $8.9 million extension of Pointe Parkway from Northwest Parkway to Hwy 105 that aims to ease holiday traffic and spur new development for 300 to 400 homes. City officials will re-evaluate local sewer infrastructure along Northwest Parkway to address critics' concerns about future building projects.  Beaumont Enterprise

  • Port Neches-Groves is now the top high school football team after its 45-7 win over Beaumont United boosted its ranking following West Orange-Stark’s loss. The team is 2-0 and will face La Porte in its next game.  Beaumont Enterprise
