COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Traffic on U.S. 69 and I-10 in Beaumont is heavy this evening as rain and a right lane closure slow vehicles on these routes. TxDOT maps and Waze reports show delays on U.S. 69 between South 4th Street and Mercantile Street and congestion easing after the I-10 interchange near Toccoa Street—motorists should allow extra time.  Beaumont Enterprise

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data from the Texas Workforce Commission showed that unemployment in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area rose from 5.3% in July to 5.9% in August, placing it fourth among major metros. The report noted that overall unemployment in Jefferson, Hardin and Orange counties reached 10.9%—figures revised from tax records and payroll data.  Beaumont Enterprise

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beaumont residents can attend open houses to learn about proposals for the Beaumont Independent Bond District, with Ward 2 meeting held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rogers Park Community Center while sessions in Ward 3 and Ward 4 are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, and a citywide meeting on October 16 at the Event Centre—accessible in person or online—will offer additional details.  KFDM
  • Beaumont City Council voted to freeze water rates for seniors at $5.68 per 1,000 gallons to ease expenses for residents on fixed incomes, and the new rate will take effect on October 1 — it will remain indefinitely.  FOX 4 Beaumont

  • TxDOT said that I-10 in Jefferson and Orange counties will have lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday to let workers stripe the road—this will slow traffic on the stretch from Walden Road to Smith Road and on I-10 westbound from the Sabine River Relief Bridge to Little Cypress Bayou. TxDOT also said there will be a 30-minute heavy haul closure on Texas 347 near U.S.69 between 8 and 10 p.m., with additional heavy haul closures planned from Sept.29 to Oct.4 and on Oct.6 and with U.S.69 northbound frontage roads closed from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • Beaumont city council approved more than $98,000 to Gap Strategies—an outside firm—to promote a $264 million bond issue set for a November 4 vote, and the decision has stirred debate among council members and taxpayers.   • Beaumont’s city council approved an extra fee of $98,000 to Gap Strategies to inform voters about the upcoming $264 million bond election on November 4—Councilman Cory Crenshaw opposed the spending while Mayor Roy West said the funds are needed to support a complex bond process.   • A confirmed case of New World screwworm was found in an 8-month-old cow in Sabinas Hidalgo on Sept 21, which raised alarm among South Texas ranchers near the Monterrey-Laredo corridor.   • Environmental Health Manager Justin Jackson inspects restaurants, grocery stores and other outlets to ensure food safety in Beaumont during National Food Safety Month — he looks for issues like improper temperatures and pest problems.
