COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Recovery Council of Southeast Texas will host its third annual Butterfly Release event Saturday, September 27th at Tyrrell Park Botanical Garden – the event will include food trucks, games, and guest speakers telling their recovery stories.  FOX 4 Beaumont
  • A Beaumont family is upset that Camp Mystic Cypress Lake will reopen next summer after flooding at Camp Mystic claimed the life of 8-year-old Mary Grace Baker and many others from St. Anne Catholic School. They say reopening the camp—while 8-year-old Cile Steward remains missing—shows that recovery efforts and plans for a proper memorial are still incomplete.  KFDM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bicycle Sports has been a long-standing bike shop in Beaumont since 1984 and will close on October 18 due to rising costs and lost online sales — owner Eric Bender said a closing party is planned if a buyer does not step in. He added that shifting consumer habits have made it difficult to keep the business running.  Beaumont Enterprise

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Lamar University's Studio Theatre presents Lindsey Ferrentino’s play 'Ugly Lies the Bone'—a story about Jess, a veteran scarred during her tour in Afghanistan who struggles to adjust using innovative VR therapy. The play runs through Sept. 28 with showtimes at 7:30 p.m. on most days and 2 p.m. on the final day.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • Ida Caldwell McFaddin was born on September 24th, 1872 and became a civic leader in Beaumont who helped build the historic McFaddin-Ward House and supported local charities—she led groups like the Daughters of the American Revolution and left a lasting mark on the city.  Beaumont Enterprise

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Port Arthur will host its annual Fall JobFair on October 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bob Bower Civic Center— a free event that connects local job seekers with employers while offering on-site interviews, resume assistance and transportation services by local agencies.  12 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tania Castelan’s nonprofit Dar Studio—founded in 2022—offers workshops and classes that empower Hispanic youth in Beaumont during Hispanic Heritage Month. Local partners now provide venues for these growing programs.  12 News Now
  • Today the Turning Point chapter at Lamar University held its first meeting after Charlie Kirk's death and saw its membership jump from nine to 210 total members—members said they plan future campus events like a petition drive to erect a statue honoring him.  FOX 4 Beaumont
  • Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath will visit Beaumont ISD on September 30 to assess the district facing a risk of state takeover after five consecutive failing grades at some campuses—superintendent Shannon Allen said the district will present its plan as Morath makes his decision within three months.  FOX 4 Beaumont

  • Hamshire-Fannett High School senior catcher Jayleigh Moralez died over the weekend from asthma complications—leaving her teammates and the community in deep mourning as the new school year began. A lantern vigil will be held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on the softball field to honor her legacy.  12 News Now
  • Freshman LaDamion McDowell is making big plays for Lamar University's football team as coach Pete Rossomando plans to give him more chances in the game against Central Arkansas on Saturday—He ran for 92 yards on 11 carries in Lamar’s last game at Texas Southern.  Beaumont Enterprise
