Hard Bean Coffee and Bistro in Beaumont raised the price of Brazilian coffee beans from $35 to $55 per bag as a 50% tariff raised import costs, causing customers to pay extra per cup—owner Diane Martin said she is now sourcing beans from Costa Rica and Chiapas.

She hopes the costs will ease within six months so the shop can return to its previous brands.

A government shutdown that began Tuesday night has halted the National Flood Insurance Program—furloughing National Park staff at Big Thicket and delaying home sales for buyers in flood plains.

Congress did not pass a funding extension and lawmakers are set to return Friday while the shutdown is expected to last at least three days.

Due to the federal government shutdown, Big Thicket National Preserve in Hardin County is closed and its employees are furloughed, causing local concerns about tourism and conservation efforts.

The preserve, which drew over 272,000 visitors and generated nearly $28 million last year, offers little economic activity now – residents are urged to contact elected officials for a solution.
