- ➤ Local WWII veteran Kate Pate Walker of the storied 6888th battalion received long overdue military honors on Friday at Live Oaks Cemetery—her ceremony featured a 21-gun salute, TAPS, and a flag folding presentation by the Southeast Texas Veterans Service Group and family. Beaumont Enterprise

- ➤ Janis Joplin, known as the Queen of Rock, was remembered on the 55th anniversary of her death on Oct. 4 & her impact on music and local history was highlighted by her time at Lamar State College of Technology in Beaumont. Beaumont Enterprise
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Beaumont will waive permit fees — expedite permits — and remove city liens for investors spending at least $50,000 on homes or $75,000 on businesses under its Empowerment Zone Economic Incentive Program. The program, which now benefits projects like the Gilbert Building downtown, grants tax abatements for three years — up to seven years for larger investments. KFDM

- ➤ Today, Beaumont did not raise water rates as the FY26 budget keeps the senior discount at $11.11 per 1,000 gallons — seniors enrolled in the program need not act. City officials will also discuss adding a 10-day grace period for late fees as they review an audit following an error that turned off water for an elderly couple. Beaumont Enterprise
- ➤ Beaumont Fire Department is partnering with Project Fire Buddies to support children with terminal illness— the department will host a cocktail party on Oct. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 434 Fannin St. to raise funds for local families and children in need. Beaumont Enterprise

- ➤ On Saturday, Kyndon Fuselier returned a Nicholls punt 88 yards for a go-ahead touchdown that gave Lamar a 24 to 17 win at Provost Umphrey Stadium in Beaumont—marking their fourth straight win as Lamar improved to a record of 4 to 1 and Nicholls dropped to five straight losses.
