  • Downtown Beaumont hosted Dogtoberfest on Saturday, October 18 — a free, city-sponsored festival that turned the streets into a dog’s paradise with costume contests, parades and vendor booths — as local shelters, groomers and rescues showcased their services to encourage dog adoptions.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • Community 180 — a local non-profit serving families in southeast Texas — is collecting toys for its 5th Annual Christmas Toy Giveaway to ensure every child in the region has a gift for the holiday. Families can register online from October 17 until November 30 for the event on December 20 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Bob Bowers Civic Center in Port Arthur.  FOX 4 Beaumont

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The City of Beaumont and Beaumont ISD launched the Beaumont Reads Literacy Bus to boost student literacy. The converted school bus holds 10 students at a time — it will drive through neighborhoods so families can pick up free books and reading packets.  KFDM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Port Neches-Groves quarterback Connor Bailey passed 4000 career passing yards with an 11 yard completion in Friday's 39 to 7 homecoming win over West Fork. He threw three touchdown passes that helped his team improve to a 7 to 0 record and 4 to 0 in district play.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • Bum Phillips, a local coaching legend who grew up in Beaumont and led the Oilers during the Luv ya Blue era, made lasting contributions to football strategy with innovations such as the three to four defense. He died Oct. 18 on his ranch in Goliad — his legacy endures through his pioneering tactics and charitable work.  Beaumont Enterprise
  • The Lamar Cardinals won a close homecoming game at Provost Umphrey Stadium in Beaumont on Saturday—Ben Woodard made a 57-yard field goal with 1:03 left and Mar Mar Evans made a key interception—to beat UT-Rio Grande Valley 23-21. The win moved their record to 6-1 and they will face Northwestern State next week.  Beaumont Enterprise
