COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Family, friends, and volunteers in Beaumont mourn Tammy Smith, founder of PAWS, who died on April 25 after a year-long fight with lung cancer. The non-profit plans a dog wash fundraiser with a raffle and bake sale to pay off remaining vet bills—supporters aim to honor her legacy by continuing her work with rescued animals.  FOX 4 Beaumont

CULTURE NEWS

  • McFaddin-Ward House Museum will host a special event on May 8 where a rare classic car display will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a free public lecture titled 'Wheels of Progress: How Detroit and Ford Motor Company Put the World on Wheels' will begin at 6:30 p.m.; the lecture, held at the museum's Visitor Center (1906 Calder Avenue), will feature transportation curator Matt Anderson from The Henry Ford Museum who will share exclusive photos and insights into the automobile industry.  KFDM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday morning the Diocese of Beaumont announced that Robert Reid stepped down as Superintendent of Catholic Schools and Alison Kiker will take over the role—Bishop David Toups said Kiker will also remain principal at St. Anne Catholic School and oversee the three Catholic grade schools while assisting at Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School.  KFDM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Interstate 10 main lanes will close at Laurel Avenue for the Maury Meyers Bridge demolition, weather permitting, starting at 8 p.m. today until 5 a.m. Monday, May 5—traffic will be diverted to frontage roads with underpass closures affecting several intersections.  KFDM
  • Beaumont drivers will face heavy delays on I-10 tonight as all lanes close at Laurel Ave from 8 p.m. today until 5 a.m. Monday for the demolition of Maury Meyers Bridge — crews are starting work to replace the bridge with a new at-ground roadway and advise using alternate routes.  12 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Meals on Wheels in Southeast Texas faces a funding crisis after federal cuts halved its budget — leaving the program solely responsible for providing between 1,300 and 1,500 meals daily to seniors. It launched the Adopt a Senior initiative on May 1 to involve community members in delivering groceries and support.  KFDM
