If you live in Nederland or Lumberton, your school district's tax measure didn't pass. Nederland ISD's Proposition A was rejected by a majority of voters, and Lumberton ISD's tax rate election also failed.
Board President Nicholas Phillips said Nederland ISD must "step back, evaluate our financial position, and start reassessing our priorities." He cautioned against guessing at cuts before administrators finish their review.
- Prop A would have added $4.1 million this fiscal year
- Nederland's costs: up nearly 20% over five years
- State funding increase over that time: less than 1%
In Lumberton, 12NewsNow reports the district must address a $1.5 million budget deficit after voters rejected an increase that would have generated $2.5 million. Superintendent Dr. John Mathews said the board will keep evaluating financial options.
The two failed measures would have raised $4.1 million and $2.5 million
